Enjoy art, culture and craftwork: in the Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum (art museum) with Germany’s largest Hans-Thoma painting exhibition.
With oil paintings, graphics, artworks and biographical documents the Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum, founded in 1949 by the mayor Dr. Ludwig Baur, gives an insight into the extensive and versatile works from Hans-Thoma.
Hans Thoma (1839-1924) was one of the most well-known and most popular German painters at the end of the 19th century.

Hans-Thoma Day - traditional Alemannic local festival
The Hans-Thoma Day is a special experience for guests, locals and art-lovers from near and far. The annual event takes place on the second weekend in August in Bernau im Schwarzwald. In conjunction with this commemoration day, more than 100 locals wearing traditional costumes celebrate a large Alemannic festival. Art, culture, traditions, folklore, pageants, theatre and an art exhibition are the highlights of a varied programme.

Traditional costume - witness of a living culture
The High Black Forest local costume with golden embroidery is one of the most beautiful in the whole of Germany. The female costume, with the golden embroidery on the “Harzer Kappe” (headdress) and the many pretty embroidered details on the bodice is unique.
Resenhof Heimatmuseum
When you step over the threshold into the low living room, it is as if you take a step back into a long-forgotten time. A tour through the 1789-built High Black Forest single-roofed barn, which is still in original condition, offers lots to discover. The Resenhof impressively conveys to the visitors how life and work in the Bernau mountain valley was back then.

Holzschnefler day in Resenhof
Annually, on the third weekend in August, the Resenhof transforms itself into a true working museum. “Holzschnefler” (wood craftsmen) demonstrate old craftwork in the Resenhof original workshops.

FORUM erlebnis:holz
The Forum erlebnis:holz, sponsored by the EU communal initiative Leader+, was built in 2007. It is a modern wooden building, mainly out of silver fir wood, with a shingle roof in the shape and material just like the old Black Forest architecture.
