Tradition in wood
From the “Holzschneflern“ (wood craftsman) to woodwork - Bernau im Schwarzwald
Forest, wood and craftwork have always played a key role in the Black Forest and in particular in the ”Holzschnefler“ (wood craftsman) village, Bernau. The mountain agriculture in the Bernau high valley could never completely feed the people, therefore they had to search for other means of income, based on their abundance of wood. For this reason the ”Holzschnefler“ shaped the future of Bernau. In around 1850 there were more than 200 ”Holzschnefler” in the Bernau area, 120 of these were pail makers, 30 were splint box makers, 12 were spoon makers and 5 wood turners. The wood was and is a vital element for life in the Bernau mountain valley for it’s people.
The Resenhof Heimatmuseum is evidence of this. A tour through the 1789-built typical Black Forest barn is a journey back to a long-forgotten time. With the theme “Life how it was back then” the Resenhof shows us how the people before the beginning of the last century in the Bernau high valley lived and worked. The Resenhof documents the centuries-old tradition of the Bernau “Holzschnefler” (wood shingle makers) with workshops for the woodwork professions.
From the former “Schnefler“ businesses a strong woodwork industry has developed in Bernau. The products, wooden toys, craftwork articles, carvings, household equipment, Black Forest furniture, supplier parts for the furniture industry and also solid wood houses.
The Resenhof and the 2007 newly-built from silver fir wood, Forum “erlebnis:holz“ show the development from the “Schnefler“ businesses to the artistic woodwork industry of today in the Bernau im Schwarzwald community.
