The chapel in Hof
Our tour of the chapels in the Bernau mountain valley leads us now to the district of Hof. The chapel here is consecrated towards John the Baptist.
In the furthest away district of the long-stretching mountain valley, we enter historical grounds, where it is well-known that the colonisation of the region began here. Hof was the nucleus of Bernau, founded by the St. Blasien Abbey.
Already in the 12th century, in 1157, Bishop Hermann of Konstanz, travelled to the then barren valley to bless a chapel in the Hof district, where now the chapel also stands. Several years later, in 1173, the chapel was confirmed to the St. Blasien Abbey by the Pope.
When the chapel doors open, you see surprisingly an altarpiece on which Christ is enthroned on the Hohfelsen above Hof with the broad Bernau valley landscape in the background. Left and right he is encircled by the four Apostles. The altarpiece is a creation from the painter Alfred Marzilius, who lived in Hof for many years.
The key to view the chapel can be collected in the "Kirchenrainhof" from Family Mathilde Baur at Hofstraße 8.
