Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum (art museum)
Enjoy art, culture and craftwork: in the Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum with Germany’s largest Hans-Thoma painting exhibition.
With oil paintings, graphics, artworks and biographical documents the Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum, founded in 1949 by the mayor Dr. Ludwig Baur, gives an insight into the extensive and versatile works from Hans-Thoma.
Hans Thoma (1839-1924) was one of the most well-known and most popular German painters at the end of the 19th century.
He was born and grew up in the Bernau district of Oberlehen and formed the German artistic heritage over decades.
Further highlights in the Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum is the presentation of the Hans-Thoma prize winners. The Hans-Thoma Prize, Large Baden-Württemberg County Prize for Fine Arts, is supported with €25,000 and is given to artists every two years, who have already exhibited an accredited piece or who show large potential to achieve such success in the future. They must be born in Baden-Württemberg or work mainly here.
The previous prize winners include Otto Dix (1967), Anselm Kiefer (1983), Fritz Klemm (1987), K.R.H. Sonderborg (1989), Dieter Krieg (1993) and Thomas Ruff (2003).
At the awards ceremony, which traditionally takes place in Bernau on Hans-Thoma Day, on the 2nd weekend in August, an exhibition with work from the newly-nominated prize winners is opened.
In the years when no Hans-Thoma Prize is awarded, the EnBW (Energie Baden-Württemberg AG) sponsored “NaturEnergie-Förderpreis” is awarded in honour of the painter Hans Thoma.
This sponsorship prize is awarded to artists who were born in the Alemannic language area or live here, or mainly concentrate their work on this area, have a portfolio of artwork and demonstrate a continuing development of their work with the hope for future success.
