Findlings sun-dial
After 25m on the way from the town hall and tourist info centre to the resort park, on the right-hand side, the first sun-dial, a granite boulder with bronze inscription, surprises visitors.
Where a sun-dial normally shows hours this sun-dial shows the names of world cities. The slanted edge of a massive pointer, tilted at roughly 47°50‘, (the respective geographical latitude of Bernau im Schwarzwald) projects it’s shadow across the clock face. When this shadow lies on a bar marked with a place name, then at exactly this time in that town it is truly midday, i.e. the sun is at its highest point in the sky. For Bernau im Schwarzwald the average time for this is 12:28. This time is engraved in the side of the pointer. In the summer months the average midday time varies by a few minutes, a maximum of plus / minus 6 minutes, in February and November this can increase to plus / minus ca. 15 minutes.
