Snowshoe tours to the Herzogenhorn
Every weekend in winter we offer supervised and guided snowshoe walks on the subalpine Herzogenhorn. At 1415m above sea level it is the second-highest Black Forest and low mountain range summit in Germany. In bad weather it offers an almost alpine winter adventure and in good weather it offers a range of viewpoints displaying a fantastic view to the central Alps, from the Zugspitze across to Mont Blanc.
Our service:
- Reception, briefing and information from your walk guide at the Hofeck lifts valley station in Bernau - Hof.
- 400 altitude metre ascent to the Krunkelbachhütte (1298m above sea level) with the cabin’s own snow tractor.
- Professional snowshoes rental (TUBBS brand) customisable to correct size
- Ski poles rental (LEKI brand), customisable to correct size
- Guided snowshoe walk to the Herzogenhorn summit and back to the cabin (ca. 2.5 hours)
- Humoured summit drink
- Evening meal in the cabin: hot, hearty goulash soup made from local free-range cows. Alternatively, tasty homemade stew with sausage. Both are complimented with home-baked farmhouse bread.
- After a cosy rest in the cabin: 3.5km guided evening sledge run back into the valley.

Our snowshoe tours are dependent on nature’s temper and essentially the depth of the snow. Therefore we adapt every tour to the current conditions.
The snow tractor can only drive when there is also enough snow in the valley. If this is not the case we walk up to the cabin by foot. You will be provided hiking poles in the car park. Once we arrive at the cabin, we enjoy a free drink and quick break, before we start the actual snowshoe walk. Additionally, the price is reduced by € 3.00.
In the case that there is so little snow that we cannot ride down on the sledge at the end - particularly in March or in winters with extremely little snow, such as in 2006/2007 - then we do an evening walk back into the valley in the light of our headlamps. The price is reduced by an additional € 3.00.
